Laura Barron

Testimony

The influential years of my childhood were spent in upstate New York and most of my friends were Jewish. In the early 1970’s, my family made the trek to California and I met a Christian girl who invited me to church for the first time. I had never heard of Jesus before so I was a complete blank slate and asked Jesus to come into my life during the service. When I told my parents about my faith, I realized that “Jews weren’t supposed to believe in Jesus.” The commitment I made that day became cemented in my heart over the next several years as I read the Bible, saw my mother commit her life to the Messiah and spent time in Israel after I graduated from San Diego State University with a BA in English Literature. I met my husband when I returned from Israel and we have spent the last 26 years (and counting) serving with Jews for Jesus in South Africa and in Canada.

Debby Dubin

Testimony

I grew up on Long Island and although my family was not religious per se, our Jewish identity and culture were a part of our family life.  Around the age of 7/8, my best friend Chris (a gentile) invited me to church with her family; my first exposure to a religion outside of Judaism. Noticing a Bible on her table one day, I opened it up to a picture of a man. Chris told me “That’s Jesus; that’s God.”  It planted questions in my mind about “why is there one God for the gentiles and another God for the Jews?  These were questions that I would continue to wrestle with for the next thirty years. After receiving my own Bible from a co-worker years later, I learned that Jesus was Jewish! I began believing His claims but as a Jewish person what would that mean? One afternoon in the summer of 1996, in a Manhattan park, I encountered a woman wearing a t-shirt that said in bold letters, “Jews for Jesus.”  That’s when I learned of the organization and began attending their bible studies.

Several weeks later, during a Jews for Jesus Shabbat service I sensed a confirmation that what I had been reading about Jesus was indeed true and prayed to receive Him into my heart. In the spring of 1999, I joined the staff in NY as an administrative worker where I met my husband Larry, also a Jewish believer in Jesus. After a brief time serving in our Los Angeles office, we moved to Washington DC in 2001 where we served for the last 16 years, just recently we’ve relocated to Florida and are serving there.

Karol Joseph

Testimony

I grew up in a Jewish suburb of Boston and attended Brandeis University for graduate school. There I became friends with another student who was a Christian and we talked often about spiritual matters. That was my first real exposure to the Gospel message.  But it was an eating disorder that ultimately brought me to the end of myself, and through attending a 12-step group for compulsive overeating, I began to learn how turn to God for help.  After experiencing God’s power and goodness personally in my life, and making my relationship with him primary, I began to sense that there was something more about Jesus. Because of my Jewish upbringing I was not inclined to believe in Him, but didn’t want to reject him if it was God’s will that I know him. So I began to pray daily asking God to show me the truth, and he did! That was in 1988.

Andrew Barron

Testimony

I was a science student whose studies in astronomy caused me to wonder about the vastness and complexity of the universe. In 1981, while helping to design and plan space shuttle missions for the United States Space Program, I came across a gospel pamphlet from Jews for Jesus and wrote a letter to the organization. One of the staff had a short speaking tour in Denver and arranged a meeting with me to discuss Jesus. Shortly after their meeting, I was convinced of Jesus’ Messiahship. I’ve served with the Los Angeles Branch, been a team leader on numerous Jews for Jesus Summer Witnessing Campaigns and pioneered the work of Jews for Jesus in South Africa. My wife, Laura (also a Jewish believer in Jesus) and I reside in North York, Ontario, with our three children Rafael, Ketzia and Simona.

Testimony

“There are Jews in Pakistan?!?” is the common reaction I get when I tell people I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. My father, a Catholic, was of Goan origin (Goa is a western province of India), and my mother comes from the Bene-Israel Jewish community in India/Pakistan. We moved to Quebec, Canada when I was about four years old.

Mom considered herself Jewish and never “converted” to Catholicism, though she held Jesus in high esteem. One Sunday, Dad enrolled my brother and me in Sunday School at a Protestant church so we would learn more about the Bible. Though I wasn’t raised typically Jewish, I knew I had Jewish roots, especially when our family visited our relatives in Israel. At age 16, I stopped going to church in order to find the “true religion.”

During my last year in university, I came across a TV program that focused on prophecy and Jesus’ return, and urged listeners to receive Jesus as their Saviour. My friends and I discussed these shows and as a result, one friend invited me to church. I went with some hesitation. Then I heard the music! It spoke of hope and assurance from God–things I didn’t have. Moreover, the way the congregation sang surprised me–they sang as though they had this hope and assurance.

Then the pastor spoke about Abraham and the binding of Isaac from Genesis 22. He compared this to God who gave His one and only son as a sacrifice for us. It was as if my mind was opened and I understood. My burdens were released and I had peace because I knew everything said about Jesus during that service was true. My family didn’t understand what happened to me but they recognized that I was different.

The more I heard preaching from the Bible, the more it all made sense. I heard a message on Isaiah 53, and again it was like my mind was opened and I understood.

Knowing Jesus made me more excited about my own Jewish heritage. I enrolled in seminary in preparation to serve God with my life. But just before my first semester at seminary, my faith in Jesus took a blow from an “anti-missionary” rabbi who was teaching me Hebrew. Nevertheless, I prayed to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to show me the truth about Jesus and show me if the New Testament is truly from Him. God answered my prayers and questions, healed my faith, and squashed my doubts by confirming that Jesus is His Messiah, the Jewish Messiah, and that the New Testament is true.

I graduated from Concordia University in Montreal, with a bachelor’s degree in Theoretical Physics, and later received a Masters of Divinity from Heritage Theological Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. My whole family has received Messiah. God has also blessed me with a beautiful wife, Kristen, and three beautiful children, Elizabeth, Nathanael, and Abigail. I want to tell my Jewish people and the whole world about Messiah Jesus and His love. He’s forever changed me. I know I’m forgiven and have a sure hope because of what Jesus did. He’s somebody worth sharing.
